The Department of Molecular Medicine and Development (DMMS) was established in 2012 through the merger of faculty and technical-administrative staff from the Departments of Experimental Pathophysiology, Medicine and Public Health, Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Physiology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, and Reproductive Medicine.
The DMMS has a multidisciplinary nature in both research and education, addressing topics in Basic Research, Clinical Studies, and Public Health.

The multidisciplinary nature of the research is also reflected in the variety of degree programs for which the Department is responsible or co-responsible.
Degree Courses for which the DMMS is responsible:
- Biotechnologies (LS-2)
- Obstetrics (L/SNT 1)
- Environmental and Occupational Prevention Techniques (L/SNT-4)
- Health Biology (LM/6)
- Nursing and Obstetric Sciences (LM/SNT-1)
- Biotechnologies of Human Reproduction (Class LM/9)
Degree Courses for which the DMMS is co-responsible:
- Medicine and Surgery (LM-41)
- Nursing (L/SNT-1)
- Biomedical Laboratory Techniques (L/SNT-3)
- DMMS manages the PhD course in Molecular Medicine
- DMMS, as a component of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMSS) at the University of Siena, shares responsibility for managing and coordinating all activities of the SMSS
The Department includes researchers of the following disciplinary areas:
