Molecular medicine is a discipline at the interface between clinical and basic biological research. It uses physical, chemical, biological, and medical methods to describe structures and mechanisms at the molecular level, identify molecular or genetic changes underlying diseases, and develop possible molecular strategies for intervention.
The Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine encompasses several disciplinary areas and is characterized by broad multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity. It encompasses several lines of research that include:
- Molecular biology and genetics of skeletal muscle tissue: pathogenetic mechanisms and therapeutic approaches
- Genetics and molecular medicine of cancer
- Pathophysiology of human reproduction
- Neurobiology of behavior
- Physiology and pathology of cardiac muscle
Beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year, the PhD in Molecular Medicine takes the form of one of the first integrated research and teaching activities between the Tuscan universities of Siena, Pisa and Florence and public and private research facilities in Tuscany
