The doctorate is organized over three years and is configured as a full-time activity. During the three years of the School, PhD students will acquire knowledge of the most current topics in biology and will develop a broad capacity for planning and developing research. The possibility of carrying out study and research stays in Italian and foreign University and non-University Centers and in private industrial structures will allow them to increase their possibilities of access to the world of work both in the academic and industrial fields. The final thesis will be presented in English with the possible title of Doctor Europeus, if at least six months of research have been spent in Europe.
Common educational objectives of the doctorate are the acquisition of basic and advanced technical skills and planning, implementation and critical interpretation of experimental and clinical results. It provides PhD students with the theoretical and practical training necessary for the advancement of research in the biomedical field and for the development and dissemination of knowledge.
1) Theoretical-practical training in the biological and biomedical field
Lectures and seminar activities are planned, the calendar of which will be proposed and approved by the Teaching Board annually and will be published on the Doctorate website. PhD students are required to attend lectures and must guarantee participation in at least 70% of the training hours. Any absences must be justified in writing to the Director of the Doctorate.
2) Theoretical-practical applied training
In order to prepare doctoral students for access to the world of research both in the academic field and in production structures or non-university research centers, specific seminars or courses will be organized regarding the main procedures and regulations in the production or application field, held by professors. coming from national bodies including the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, the National Research Council and private structures such as Toscana Life Science.
3) Laboratory or clinical research activities
Each PhD student will have to prepare a research project at the beginning of the year, after discussing it with their tutor.
4) The transition from one course year to the next is decided by the Teaching Board based on the evaluation of the activity carried out by the PhD student. The results of this activity will be presented during a Report Meeting which will involve all PhD students and teachers (PhD Day).
5) Internationalization
Study stays at facilities abroad are foreseen (envisaged as mandatory for some types of scholarship), and a minimum of three months is required to be able to access the title of Doctor Europaeus.
Within the last 6 months of the 3rd year, PhD students will submit an application for admission to the final exam to the Teaching Board. The candidate will present his final data during the Report Meeting. The Board will evaluate the activity carried out and decide on admission to the final exam for each individual PhD student.
Admission criteria:
Participation in training activities
Scientific results (which must be consistent with the proposed project and such as to allow its publication)
Publications (participation in conferences and/or articles in magazines)
The thesis will be written in English.
